Did you and your cats watch David Letterman last night? Barack Obama was on The Late Show with David Letterman and he gave a really interesting interview. Dave and Barack talked about real issues like what Barack would have done differently if he had been president on September 11th, 2001 and how he would specifically do things differently in Afghanistan today.
We cats took some notes about what Barack said:
- No comments on cats but an orange stuffed cat was present at the interview
- Barack said Bush did the right thing in going into Afghanistan and going after the Taliban
- Reminded us that after the attacks of 9/11 Americans were ready to do anything to help and Bush asked us to shop.
- Barack says instead he would have asked us to reduce our dependence on Middle Eastern Oil or to support creation of the kind of energy efficient economy that will would allow us to weaken the forces of terror. He thinks people could have gotten around bold plans on energy that would make sure we aren't in the situation we are in today.
- Barack says he would not have gotten distracted by Iraq but instead would have kept focus on Afghanistan until we captured or killed Bin Laden or at least eliminated the terrorist bases there.
- He said that his approach to Afghanistan will include more troops but also civilian efforts like assisting farmers in moving to viable alternatives to growing poppy, improving education, reducing corruption, improving medical care.
- Barack said we haven't taken the steps necessary since 9/11 that would have made us safer today including: 1. Stay focused in Afghanistan, 2. Not spend $1 Trillion dollars in Iraq, 3. Focused on our energy problems here, 4. Hardened chemical plants and ports, 5. Implemented the 9/11 commission report recommendations.
- Barack said he would deal with Pakistan which is where Bin Laden is actually hiding. We have given 10 billion dollars to the leader of Pakistan and they didn't go after Bin Laden. Barack said that if we protect dictators because we think that's the best we can do we are actually creating an environment in Pakistan that becomes anti-American and feeds the militancy that can damage us.
Right now the Late Show has only posted the first 7 minutes of the interview. Its great, but the entire hour would be worth your time if you can find it on your Tivo or your neighbor's Tivo or your neighbor's cat's Tivo... Anyway, if you want to get to know Barack better.
